Millennium bug tests ‘a success’

EUROTUNNEL, Stena Line and Brittany Ferries are among the suppliers who have successfully carried out year 2000 tests.

The Ferry Focus Group has brought many of the main Unicorn EDI users together to make sure that, when January 1 2000 arrives, the systems will function correctly.

The group is sponsored by the Travel Technology Initiative which develops technical standards for the industry.

It is chaired by Bob Parsons of technology consultancy Equinus.

Parson said companies that took part in the tests shared their results, thus increasing confidence in the smooth running of technology over the crucial period.

Tests have concentrated on the compliancy of both computer hardware and software.

The group will now continue the work, covering the period up to February 29 2000 and also the same periods in 2001.

This, it is hoped, will prove that any software changes that have been made are not simply valid for one year.
