Questions and Answers: South Africa self-drive

We asked Travel 2 what were the most frequent queries from clients about self-drive holidays in South Africa.

How safe is driving in South Africa?

South Africa does have a high crime rate but this should not deter travellers from visiting the country – you simply have to use common sense. Make sure you have a good route map and detailed directions before you set off, and always keep your car doors locked. Don’t venture from the main routes. You can hire mobile phones on arrival in South Africa and we would definitely recommend this for people exploring independently.

What sort of driving distances should travellers expect?

South Africa is a deceptively vast country and it is easy to be too ambitious with your itinerary. However, distances on the Garden Route – the most popular area – are very manageable; Cape Town to Stellenbosch is just 50km and can be done in about 40mins. On the eastern end of the route, Port Elizabeth is just a couple of hours’ drive from Plettenberg Bay.

What are the roads like?

Excellent, especially the main routes which are tarred. South Africa does have some gravel roads but these are generally away from the main tourist areas and it is unlikely you will need to drive on them.

Is car rental expensive?

Vehicle hire is more expensive than in a number of other long-haul destinations, but not outrageously so, and this is offset by the low cost of living and cheap fuel. It is worth looking at motorhomes which give you complete freedom. The country has some good campsites and you can save a lot of money on hotels. Again, travellers should bear safety in mind and only camp in recognised sites.
