Contiki Holidays reduces standard of accommodation

ADVENTURE specialist Contiki Holidays has reduced the standard of accommodation used in its Australia itineraries from four-star resorts to budget hotels. The operator says this follows client requests for a range of two and three-star hotels and farm stays at cheaper prices. According to director of sales and marketing Gordon Dirker, these will be “less expensive but more fun”.Most of Contiki’s custom comes from the 18-35 backpacking market. The new properties are featured in the operator’s latest Australia and New Zealand brochure. It also includes more excursions. To increase flexibility, Contiki has split longer itineraries into modules, which can be sold separately or linked to form a more ambitious tour. Also new is a series of four-wheel-drive, off-road adventures. The itineraries include a five-day Rocks and Rivers tour from £220 for five days. It starts and ends in Darwin in Northern Territory and takes in Kakadu National Park.A Wet and Wilderness option costs £369 for seven days travelling between Darwin and Broome in Western Australia.Another one-week trip entitled Gold ‘n’ Outback costs £375 and runs between Broome and Alice Springs, while a five-day itinerary known as Alice and Wonderland includes Ayers Rock in a round trip from Alice Springs. This costs £219.
