Aviation minister to speak at Abta Travel Matters event

Abta has revealed aviation minister Mike Kane will deliver the keynote speech at this year’s Travel Matters event.

The gathering in central London on Tuesday, December 3 will be moderated by LBC presenter Tom Swarbrick under the theme ‘Travel in Turbulent Times’.

Travel Matters was originally due to take place earlier in the year, but was rearranged when it was announced a general election would be held.

Luke Petherbridge, director of public affairs at Abta, said: “With the new government only a few months into office, this will be a fantastic opportunity for the industry to hear Labour’s thoughts on the challenges facing the industry today, and their plans to help the UK’s aviation and travel sector compete into the future.”

After Kane’s speech, Hazel McGuire, general manager for the UK and Ireland at Intrepid, will set out what needs to be done to support the industry in moving towards decarbonisation.

Sonia Sodha, chief leader writer at The Observer, will share her opinions on the changes that a new government could bring both in the UK and globally.

Swarbrick will then chair a panel discussion exploring travel’s priorities for the next government, including how the travel industry can make sure it is heard by new ministers.

The panel will feature Petherbridge, Crestview Strategy vice-president Christine Quigley, Tui public policy specialist Nathan Stower and Airlines UK’s Rob Griggs, who is policy and public affairs director.
