Frequent flyers plan to resume regular trips

Travellers who were frequent flyers before the pandemic expect to take almost six flights in the next 12 months, according to research.

Compared with pre-Covid averages of almost 10 flights per year, this represents a 61% recovery compared with 2019 travel patterns.

The findings are from a survey by airport lounge specialist Collinson, which polled more than 46,000 members of its Priority Pass programme, including 3,673 in the UK.

Reasons for growing travel confidence include widespread availability of vaccines, and the introduction of digital health certificates.

David Evans, joint chief executive of Collinson, said: “It’s now up to governments around the world to agree and align on an effective programme to restart frequent international travel, using digital health certificates, alongside pre-departure and on-arrival testing to diminish or remove quarantine time, while keeping travellers safe.”

Elsewhere, another poll found that half of young people are ready to travel abroad this summer – while others remain more “Covid-wary” especially over the cost and reliability of testing.

A survey of 2,008 adults, conducted by Opinium on behalf of Covid testing specialist Cignpost ExpressTest, found that 48% of those aged 18 to 34 plan to travel overseas this summer.

It identified four distinct groups across different age ranges: Ready to Pack; Waiting to Book; Covid Cautious; and Staycationers.

The average amount that travellers were willing to pay was £38 per test, with those aged 18-34 willing to pay the most.

There were concerns about results being returned in time for travel and the ease of getting tested overseas.

Christian Corney, chief executive of Cignpost ExpressTest said: “It is not surprising that so many people remain cautious about travelling abroad this summer. We want to make it as easy as possible to book a test and guarantee a result back within 24 hours from any of our 25 testing centres across the country.”
