Germany to ease ban on UK travellers from January 4

Germany is to ease restrictions on visitors from the UK from January 4.

A statement on the German embassy’s website said the UK would be classified as a high-risk area from midnight on Tuesday, rather than an area of variants of concern.

The move would lift a ban on carriage and entry, with those who are fully vaccinated able to enter without a need to show a negative Covid test or quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

The German government implemented tighter rules allowing only German citizens and residents to travel from the UK on December 19, amid concern over the spread of the Omicron variant.

The statement said: “With effect from 0:00 hours CET on Tuesday 4 January 2022, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be classified as a high-risk area. This will result in changes to the entry regulations (ban on carriage and entry to be lifted).

“This means, among other things, that people who are fully vaccinated or who have an important reason for travelling will also be allowed to enter Germany. In addition, people who are fully vaccinated will not need a negative Covid test to enter the country, nor will they need to quarantine for 14 days on entry.”

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said the move was a “welcome development from our German colleagues”.

Gareth Shaw, Which? head of money, said: “Germany’s decision to lift the UK travel ban for vaccinated tourists or those who have an important reason for travelling will be welcome news for anyone hoping to visit Germany in 2022.

“However, international travel remains unpredictable during the pandemic and anyone looking to book a trip abroad could risk losing some or all of their money.

“If you’re looking to book a holiday, you should book a package, as these come with stronger financial protections, and only use a good provider with a reliable flexible booking policy. A good travel insurance policy will continue to be essential, and it’s also advisable to book with a credit card to give yourself further protection.”
