Updated: Jet2 cancels Skiathos departures up to September 12

Jet2.com and sister operator Jet2holidays have cancelled all flights and holidays that are due to depart to the Greek island of Skiathos up to and including next Tuesday (September 12).

The island was hit by flash floods earlier this week when a severe storm brought heavy rainfall and lightning.

Tui cancelled six flights to the island from UK airports on Tuesday and Wednesday. Affected holidaymakers were told they could amend their holiday for free with a 10% rebooking incentive or receive a full refund.

Tui added: “For those due to travel from the 8th of September, we are actively monitoring the weather forecast and will be in direct contact with a travel update as soon as possible. If you wish to change your holiday, we are offering a fee free amend with a 10% rebooking incentive.”

A statement for the trade from Jet2 and Jet2holidays said its cancellations were caused by “extraordinary circumstances” and were made “with our mutual customers’ best interests in mind”.

“As well as providing certainty for our customers and independent travel agency partners, we believe that this is the right thing to do in terms of allowing the island and its population to quickly  return to normal following this week’s events,” said the statement.

Jet2 will be contacting affected customers and travel agents about refunds and rebooking options.

“We plan to fly our scheduled programme of aircraft to Skiathos with no customers onboard, so that we can bring customers back to the UK,” added the statement.

“We will review this flying programme closely and may put on additional aircraft to fly customers home if required.”

Six flights that had been scheduled to operate between Monday and today (September 4-6) had already been cancelled because of the weather.

“We are continuing to closely monitor the situation on the island and have been in touch with customers in resort to advise them of the situation, and to ask them to follow the advice of the local authorities as well as their hoteliers,” said Jet2.

“Our in-resort teams are working tirelessly to visit and look after customers despite infrastructure challenges caused by the weather.

“We recognise that this is an extremely difficult and unpleasant experience for our mutual customers, and we of course are extremely sorry to hear this.

“Although extraordinary events such as these are completely outside of our control, our absolute focus is on doing everything we can to look after everyone.”

Tui also said: “We are currently seeing unusual adverse weather conditions in a small number of destinations across Europe which we know is causing concern for some of our customers due to travel.

“Please be assured that we actively monitor weather conditions in all the destinations we visit to be sure it is safe for our customers and colleagues. Should there be any concerns about a destination then we will be in direct contact with customers with options for their holiday.

“This might be a change in travel date or the option to change their holiday to a different destination.”
