New transport committee chair sought after Huw Merriman becomes minister

A new chair of the Commons transport committee is being sought after Huw Merriman was appointed a minister at the Department for Transport.

The MP for Bexhill and Battle resigned as chair of the cross-party transport committee after being elevated to a minister in prime minister Rishi Sunak’s government reshuffle.

Nominations to fill the vacancy as chair of the committee close at midday on November 15.

Only Conservative members may stand for election although all MPs are able to vote in the election process.

If there is only one candidate, the result is likely to be announced that day.

If more than one nomination is received, a ballot will take place on November 16 with the results given later that day by the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Candidates require 15 signatures from their own party to be nominated.

Merriman’s responsibilities as minister of state have yet to be confirmed, with Baroness Vere covering aviation among multiple other areas.

North West Durham MP Richard Holden has also been named alongside Baroness Vere as a parliamentary under secretary of state at the DfT.
