Travel spend remained ‘positive’ in October, Barclaycard finds

Spending on overseas travel remained in “positive growth” in October over last year, the latest Barclaycard UK consumer spending report shows.

Travel agents and airlines saw increases of 48.3% and 37.6% respectively against the same month in 2021.

“Whilst this is lower than last month at 94.7% (travel agents) and 60.1% (airlines), this is against the backdrop of large growth in travel October 2021 as the travel market opened up further post-pandemic and customers booked for summer 2022,” the report said.

Meanwhile, spend on eating out at restaurants had negative growth for the third consecutive month, while outlay on takeaways and fast food grew for the fifth consecutive month.

Energy bills remain a concern despite the government’s Energy Bills Support Scheme.

And half of consumers were found to be swapping nights out for staying in this autumn and winter to save money.

Barclays Corporate Banking head of hospitality and leisure, Mike Saul, said: “It is clear that consumers are thinking carefully about their leisure spend as hew cost of living continues to bite, with eating in and gone entertainment growing in popularity as we head int the long winter evenings.”
