The UK Foreign Office has warned travellers to Mexico about strong winds and heavy rainfall along the Pacific coastline as Hurricane Hilary approaches the country.
An update to the FCDO advice for Mexico on Thursday (August 17) said: “Hurricane Hilary is expected to continue moving north along Mexico’s Pacific Coast on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 August, before dissipating.
“The US National Hurricane Center has put in place a tropical storm warning for the south coast of Baja California.
“We expect further warnings to be put in place as the storm approaches land. Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected and there is a high risk of flooding, coastal storm surges, and mudslides.”
The US National Hurricane Center said that “heavy rainfall in association with Hilary” is expected to hit the southwestern US from Friday through to early next week, peaking on Sunday and Monday.
The UK FCDO advises travellers to monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities and tour operators, including any evacuation orders.
It also warned: “In the aftermath of a hurricane, there can be flooding, high winds and continued rainfall.”
The hurricane season in Mexico normally runs from June to November and can affect the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
