Princess Cruises highlights sustainability at float out of new ship

The latest Princess Cruises ship has been floated out at an Italian shipyard in a key stage of its construction.

The 4,300-passenger Sun Princess has been designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

The new-generation vessel, the first in the fleet to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), is due to enter service in the Mediterranean and other parts of Europe in 2024.

Two shore power connections will enable the ship to turn off its engines and connect to local electric power to run on board services during day-long calls in various ports, reducing air emissions.

Technology will also be deployed to convert a variety of combustible materials into thermal energy that can be used in other systems on board.

Food waste management systems have been designed as a clean alternative to recycle food waste and reduce use of landfills, according to the line.

The float out of the ship at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone completes the first comprehensive phase of construction for Sun Princess which now moves to focus on building the ship’s interiors.

Features will include entertainment The Dome, a Piazza, and a three-storey Horizons dining room.

Princess Cruises’ hotel general manager Simona Stumberger was selected to act as Madrina at the traditional float out ceremony to offer blessings and best wishes for the new vessel.
