Strike action in France set to compound Easter cross channel travel delays

Concerns about a repeat of disruption to cross channel travel over the Easter bank holiday weekend will be compounded by the latest round of protests in France against pension reforms.

The Foreign Office warned against both in an updated travel alert for France.

The advisory highlighted “a possibility” of delays over the Easter bank holiday weekend “as high levels of cross channel traffic on all routes are expected”.

The alert came after a call for crisis talks in an effort to avoid a repetition of lengthy delays for coaches at the port of Dover last weekend due to post-Brexit passport checks at the start of the Easter school half term.

No further update has yet emerged from the port, coach industry trade body the Confederation of Passenger Transport or ferry companies on plans to tackle increased levels of Easter long weekend traffic.

However, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “Check for latest information with your travel operator, including their advice on how early you should arrive at the terminal.

“Where possible, you should make sure you have a confirmed booking before you travel and ensure you are fully prepared for your trip with enough food and water.”

The FDCO went on to warn about “co-ordinated strike action and large-scale demonstrations” next planned for tomorrow (April 6).

“Industrial action may start the evening before the strike day and run for several days,” the travel advisory said.

“Since mid-March there have been spontaneous protests in central Paris and elsewhere in France. Protests are likely to take place and could occur with little notice. Some protests have turned violent. The protests may lead to disruptions to road travel.

“There is also ongoing strike action affecting multiple sectors including transport networks. You should monitor the media, check the latest advice with operators before travelling, avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities.”
