JEA endorses British European as new name
Report by PAULNORRIS
British European has been chosen as the new name for JerseyEuropean Airways in order to reflect a growing international network.Aircraft and airport facilities will sport the new name from June 1. Aircraft livery will also be changed from next month but the carrier will keep the orange-based tailfins.
Chief executive Barry Perrott said: “The name has been a misnomer for a few years and with the introduction of new routes, it was increasingly evident that it was inappropriate as a name.”
He said the introduction of new Canadair Regional Jets will allow the airline to launch longer-haul flights from its Birmingham hub.
“We will look to add routes to Scandinavia, Germany, France and Italy,” he said.
The airline is investing £150m in new jets and Dash-8 turboprops to expand its domestic and international business. Domestic flights from London City Airport are being added this year.
Perrott also said the airline’s franchise agreement with Air France will be expanded after the signing of a new five-year deal with the flag carrier. The present agreement sees British European flying to Paris and other French cities on behalf of Air France. Perrott added that the relationship with Air France could mean that the airline joins the Air France/Delta Air Lines global alliance.
He said British European will look at routes from the UK that British Airways is dropping due to cost. These could be flown on behalf of Air France or in British European’s own right.
BA lost £10m on the route in three years and is axing it this winter. It will move extra capacity on to its Gatwick-Jersey service with subsidiary Cityflyer. British European is expected to apply to take over the Heathrow route.
