n cathay pacific sees profits rise to £187mCathay Pacific Airways has reported a leap in profits to £187.2 million for the first half of this year. This compares with a £9.3 million profit in the same period the year before. The airline, which attributed the rise to the economic recovery in Asia, also achieved a 23.1% rise in turnover to £1.4 billion. Passenger numbers grew by 17% to 5.8 million.

Accor Economy Hotels has opened a new 141-room Ibis hotel near Gatwick airport. The hotel, located 15 minutes’ drive from the airport, has 74 car-parking places. The weekday room rate is £49.50.

Thomascook.com had more visitors to its site in June than any other travel Web site, according to Internet research provider Nielsen NetRatings. The site was ranked 20th last February.
n authorities seek to fine cruiselines
US environmental authorities are seeking to fine Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line for funnel emissions that violated air-quality regulations in Alaska last summer. The proposed fines are $110,000 and $55,000 respectively. Princess citedshort-term technical and operational issues for two incidents of smoke emission in Seward, and expressed regret. NCL refused to comment.

Unijet has launched a dedicated US brochure with the aim of going head to head with specialist operators. Sales and marketing director Alan Hopley said it wants to compete with specialists such as Funway and Jetsave.The brochure incorporates Las Vegas and California.
