Southend airport has pitched into the London airport growth debate by insisting it can provide extra runway capacity immediately.
The under-served Essex airport is calling for broader consideration as London debates its airport capacity.
With Heathrow and Gatwick pursuing long-term runway developments and Luton looking to raise its passenger cap, Southend argues that it has the infrastructure to provide airport capacity immediately.
The airport is urging decision-makers to prioritise “immediate, scalable” solutions as chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed government backing for a third runway at Heathrow.
The airport believes it can provider immediate capacity to help support London’s aviation demand.
Its location and infrastructure make it a “critical driver for local and national economies, providing a faster and more immediate solution,” according to airport chiefs .
Chief executive Jude Winstanley said: “London Southend airport is uniquely positioned to help address the current capacity crunch in London and the southeast.
“Our fully operational runway, growing airline partnerships, and seamless connectivity to central London via rail and road make us the perfect choice for airlines and passengers right now. While other airports plan for tomorrow, London Southend is ready today.”
EasyJet, which already flies from the airport, will be opening a base at Southend this year with three based aircraft and a network of nearly 20 destinations.
