Hotel Check: Shangri-La, Kowloon

Location: overlooking Victoria Harbour, Kowloon. Within walking distance of the Star Ferry, Hoverferry, MTR (underground metro) and 45mins drive from the international airport.


Rooms: 725 spacious rooms and suites with wide bay windows and many offering superb views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. The mini bar is well stocked with goodies – even a disposable camera for the forgetful tourist.


Leisure facilities: great gym, small pool, Jacuzzi and massage rooms (around £37 for 45mins massage). Disco on first floor. Gift shops, beauty salon, laundry service, valet parking.


Business and conference: the 24hr business centre is quite small but there are plans to expand it – each guest is entitled to use it for free for 15mins every day.


Bars/restaurants: eight but the four main restaurants are Californian, Japanese, Chinese and French.


Sample price: Kuoni offers five nights at the Kowloon Shangri La on a room-only basis, including international flights and transfers from £752 per person; Premier offer prices from £839 per person .


Extras: for a supplement of around £150 a night, business travellers can stay on the 20th and 21st VIP floors and take advantage of the Horizon Club lounge with free snacks all day and complimentary cocktails from 5pm-7pm. Also offers private check in and out service, personal pursor, in-room fax and free pressing service.


Unusual facts: the carpets in the lift are changed every day. Each carpet has the day of the week written on it so that jet lagged guests know the correct day.


Overall opinion: everything you could want from facilities to superb location. Service is unobtrusive, friendly, quick and efficient. Hotel is renowned for its friendly service – 30% of staff are so happy they have been here over 10 years and 60% of guests are repeat bookers.
