Firm demands regulation on travel training
THERE is a desperate need for regulation of training courses to stem the skills shortages in the sector, a leading recruiter has warned.
Julia Fewell, managing director of marketing consultancy New Frontiers, said many courses are not geared towards the modern travel sector as tutors lack experience, leading to frustration for the candidate and employer alike.
The problem stems from the decision five years ago by ABTA and the Institute of Travel and Tourism to stop validating and approving courses, she said.
The one exception is the sandwich-course open to some students, which prepares them more effectively for work in the industry, said Fewell.
She added: “The industry still suffers from acute skills shortages and yet thousands of students, having done various courses are not prepared. Any person can set up any course.”
Academics and industry figures will discuss this issue at a conference organised by New Frontiers on November 20.
