Tourist office celebrates new era
THE Antigua Tourist Office will be celebrating a ‘New Era of Quality for Antigua and Barbuda’ promotion at this year’s World Travel Market.
Minister for tourism and the environment, Molwyn Morgorson Joseph, will reveal details of this as well as hotel refurbishments and a new training programme being run in conjunction with American Express.
This year’s Antigua stand is 12% larger than in the past, due to increased demand from the tourist board’s partners and suppliers who want to attend the show.
It has been designed to resemble the island’s heritage site, Nelson’s Dockyard, and the tourist office is inviting Meridian members to find out more about the island’s historic appeal.
The islands’ director of tourism, Dorne Sowerby, will also be on hand to promote many other attractions, including beautiful beaches and a wide range of hotels and sporting facilities.
These include Antigua’s diving waters, something the island has not traditionally been known for.
Sowerby said: “We are not known for our diving in the way the Cayman islands are but we have some fabulous sites and because they are generally not known about they are never crowded.”
In all, Antigua has more than 200 known dive sites – more than any other Caribbean island. There are six accredited dive sites but the recent opening of a new Professional Association of Diving Instructors-accredited dive school should boost interest.
