THE northern Greece mainland region of Halkidiki has seen a
30% increase in UK holidaymakers for the year ended October 2000 compared to
the same period last year.
This represents 100,000 arrivals and 1.1 million overnights
at a time when Greece as a whole experienced only a 3% growth in the UK market,
according to Halkidiki Hotel
Association president Makis Athanassopoulos.
“Halikdiki has become very popular with the British this
year, helped by the increase in additional operator programmes and more
capacity from existing firms,” he added.
Athanassopolous said the region is well established in the
UK market as a traditional beach destination and he now wants to widen the
season.
