The Federation of Tour Operators is lobbying the European Commission to establish a safety directive following a Holiday Which? survey which found many hotel swimming pools used by its members were dangerous.
Hotel pools in Cyprus and Gran Canaria used by operators such as Thomson, First Choice and Cosmos were targeted in the report. It found dangerous practices in 28 out of 43 properties. Missing pool filter outlets, unmarked depths, inadequate children’s pools and lack of no-diving signs were all problems.
An FTOspokesman said it welcomed the report and wanted to find a solution to the problem. It is backing MPJohn Cryer’s call for an ECsafety directive which would encompass pool safety.
