Club Med gets active with plan to double UKcarryings

CLUB Med is looking to double carryings from the UK to 80,000 within four years as the company continues its rapid turnaround.

The French operator reported a net profit in the year ending October 31 of £24.23m – up 48% on the previous year.

Chief executive officer Philippe Bourguignon said:”The momentum of the recovery has accelerated throughout the 1999 financial year.”

As well as doubling the UK operation, Bourguignon said the aim was to double the size of the company by 2003.

Amid further speculation that Preussag is tracking Club Med, he added Club Med will play a part in the consolidation of the European market although he played down rumours of a bid from Germany. “We will be active in Europe,” he said.

Meanwhile, the operator is to create a subsidiary called Club Med On Line which will exploit the development of the Internet.

Bourguignon said booking and paying for holidays on-line will be possible within three months.
