Fall in demand prompts UScapacity cuts

CAPACITY in the Tropical Paradise brochure has been cut following a fall in demand for the US and Caribbean.

Cosmos managing director Nigel Wright declined to reveal figures, but said capacity has been reduced because destinations such as Florida, Mexico and the Dominican Republic are not performing well.

“Florida and other dollar-related destinations have had a poor year because of the currency’s strength and rising fuel costs. We feel this will continue into 2002,” Wright said.

“These destinations tend to be alternatives to Spain and Greece for families. If they get too expensive, people will just return to Europe,” he added.

New for 2002 are two properties in Jamaica – the Starfish Trelawny Beach and Fun Resort and Riu Tropical. For the first time, clients can pre-book seats on all charter flights.

Charges, valid from this November to November 2002, are down by between 3% and 5%. Prices lead in at £329 per person for seven nights’ bed and breakfast at the Coral Bay Tiran, Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Wright added: “The product is an important part of the portfolio and popular with families looking to step up from an apartment,” he said. “We will probably add destinations and villas in the next edition.”
