Josephides’ concerns are right on track

In his column (Travel Weekly January 24), Noel Josephides expressed his concern at the proposals to increase hotel bed capacity in Cyprus and thus “opening the gates to low-price tourism”.

As Noel has said in previous columns, this is nothing new in travel and tourism.

Since he has only been “27 years in tourism,” he probably won’t remember the ghastly overdevelopment of Famagusta prior to the 1974 troubles.

Rows of high-rise hotels lined the front for miles and were built so close to the fabulous beach, that for most of the day it was in shade from those hotels.

And what about the slums of Nicosia?

As you say Noel, those responsible in Cyprus for this new development proposal are “pursuing a high-risk policy which may well backfire”.

But memories are short, especially where there is profit to be made.
