Take a fresh route to driving sales potential

cheaper policy from an intermediary.

The company’s Motorsafe policy costs £12.51 net for five days breakdown cover, rising to £19.87 net for up to 17 days.

By comparison, Perry Gamble’s Motorsurance costs £20 including 15% commission, but excluding insurance premium tax – charged at 5% on all breakdown policies – for up to five days, or £35.50 for up to 17 days. AA Five Star costs £36 and £57.60 respectively for non-members.

Perry Gamble chairman Joe Perry said:”Agents are not switched on to selling Motorsurance.

“The tendency is to let clients buy it from the AA or RAC, who do not pay commission. They are missing a big sales opportunity.”

Ketteridge general manager sales Doug Weston said clients also buy breakdown cover from ferry operators.

Stena Line, P&O North Sea Ferries and Irish Ferries offer AA Five Star, while Brittany Ferries sells Europ Assistance in its brochure.

European motor-breakdown insurance is what the name suggests. It covers drivers involved in an accident or breakdown overseas, in which case help is provided by assistance firms.

Europ Assistance is one of the leading assistance companies in the market, along with Green Flag but some intermediaries such as Hamilton Barr have their own roadside service.

Most policies on the market are much the same in terms of what they cover, although limits do vary (see panel).

They all provide roadside assistance; repatriation for the insured person’s vehicle if it cannot be repaired locally; and accommodation, car hire and repatriation costs for the driver and passengers if they are delayed waiting for a car to be repaired or cannot get home with the car.

Policies also pay for spare parts to be sent to a garage if need be; and provide a chauffeur to bring the party back home if the driver is injured.

The cost of a rental car in case the insured person’s vehicle is damaged or stolen up to seven days before the holiday departure date is also covered.

Primary launched into the motor-breakdown market at the end of last year with a policy priced from £2.91 net a day and £8.73 net for five days.

The policy includes the usual cover, with extra features such as up to £250 if the insured driver has to make an overseas court appearance and up to £150 for loss or damage.

Euclidian Risk Management is developing a policy for a specific, unnamed client, and said if this goes ahead, it could be rolled out for sale through the trade later this year.

INSURANCE intermediaries are urging agents to wake up to the opportunities to sell European motor-breakdown insurance to the thousands of holidaymakers who take their cars overseas each year.

Hamilton Barr sales director Michael Pettifer said the majority choose to buy AA Five Star or RAC motor-breakdown insurance rather than taking a cheaper policy from an intermediary.
