Missouri calls on US to embrace UK trade
TOURIST chiefs in Missouri have called on fellow US states not to walk away from the UK trade in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the US and the on-going conflict in Afghanistan.
Director of marketing for Missouri tourism Donna Cordle-Powell insisted predictions of a prolonged downturn in business would talk down the market and cause the withdrawal of marketing funds and support for operators.
The remarks came as Missouri prepares to unveil its biggest-ever promotional campaign in the UK with a window display in conjunction with US specialist Getaway.
“We will work with more than 150 travel agents, more than we have ever done, and produce a window display promoting Missouri,” said Cordle-Powell.
“We will also be running agent competitions. Some tour operators specialising in the US are worried about what is going to happen but we will be working harder and more efficiently than ever. I urge other states do the same.”
Cordle-Powell continued: “Of course we need to be prudent with our money but to crawl into a hole would become a self-fulfiling prophecy.”
She said research in the UK revealed the importance of continuing to embrace the trade with 68% of all consumers swayed in their decision-making by agents.
