Turkey calls for urgent cash injection
Turkey specialist operators are urgently demanding their government improves its £2 million UK budget for 2002 following a 35% downturn in bookings since September 11.
The sum is the same as this year’s and, unless it is improved, tourism officials fear the country will lose out to rival Mediterranean destinations.
Association of Specialist Turkish and Northern Cyprus Tour Operators president Akin Koc said Turkey is suffering because it is a Muslim country and from the perception that it is in the Middle East.
He said: “Considering that Turkey is at a disadvantage in being close to the war and a Muslim country, we need at least £5 million in this crisis.
“We need a realistic budget, £2 million is not enough for a normal year. There must be heavy promotion on television and in the press.”
Koc, also managing director of Anatolian Sky Holidays, said operators are disappointed Turkish Airlines has received government subsidies when they are not being offered help.
“If the conflict is over by Christmas the market will not be affected next year. If it continues Turkey will suffer.”
