Tension was a sign of what we’ve become
Despite everything that has happened in the past two months, it was gratifying to see such a healthy turn out at World Travel Market last week. Exhibitor numbers may have been down, but the fact that so many decided to go ahead with their plans demonstrated the industry’s commitment to play its part in the war against terrorism.
But nerves remain understandably frayed and the tension in the hall was palpable when news of the American Airlines crash in New York came through. Likewise the relief when it was announced over the tannoy that the disaster was not the result of terrorism.
Many exhibitors we spoke to expressed guilt at their reaction, considering the death toll, but they have nothing to be ashamed of. After what happened on September 11, we are bound to assume the worst, probably for a long time to come.
That doesn’t mean the terrorists have won, it’s just a terrible sign of the times.
