airport stoppage passes without incident

SECURITY staff at Manchester Airport carried out the first
of several planned one-hour stoppages today in protest at budget cuts that
could see 200 people lose their jobs.

The industrial action by members of the Transport and General
Workers Union took place between 6am and 7am, although replacement staff were
called in. A spokesman for the airport said its contingency plans had worked
and operations continued as normal.

Another stoppage planned for Thursday.
