A Thomson flight from Newcastle to Cyprus was forced to make an emergency landing yesterday after the crew complained of “haze” in the cabin.
The flight to Larnaca landed safely at Stansted Airport in Essex on Sunday morning, a spokeswoman for the airline said.
All 154 passengers and seven crew members on board used the aircraft’s emergency slides to evacuate the plane, while ambulance and fire crews were alerted as a precaution. A couple of passengers received minor friction burns from using the emergency chutes, the airline said.
The spokeswoman said: “Flight TOM 2807 from Newcastle to Larnaca diverted to Stansted due to a haze in the cabin. The flight landed at 9:35am and the captain made the decision to carry out an emergency evacuation.”
She said the airline was currently investigating why there was a “haze” in the cabin but she added that nobody had suffered any ill effects while on board.
In 2004, a flight in the US was downed for similar reasons. An investigation found that a failed air conditioning unit could have been the cause of the haze.
