Homeworking firms look to capitalise on merger job losses – 15 Feb 2007

Homeworking firms are expecting to capitalise on the expected job losses at MyTravel and Thomas Cook.

After Thomson announced 900 jobs were to go in December Future Travel stationed a recruitment van outside the Glasgow call centre.

Brand development manager Amanda Taylor said it was likely a similar recruitment campaign would target MyTravel and Thomas Cook staff.

“The merger presents itself as a massive recruitment opportunity,” she said.

Travel Counsellors chairman David Speakman said with all the big four downsizing the company would be happy to speak to anyone keen to take charge of their own destiny.

“They just have to keep an open mind, contact us and see what’s on offer. The future is with quality travel agents, not on the high street. The mass market, package tour, vertically integrated operators are a very old model.”
