British dead in Thai air crash named

The eight British passengers killed in the Thai air crash on Sunday have been named in the press.

Two couples from Scunthorpe have been named as Neil and Helen Slater, and Susan Howell and Steve Saunby. Other Britons confirmed dead are Tony and Judy Weston from Bristol, Colin Denny and Alexander Collins.

Foreign secretary David Miliband said: “Everyone will have been shocked by the news of the air crash in Thailand on Sunday. My thoughts are with all of those who have been affected, and particularly with the families of the eight British nationals who lost their lives.

“Three British nationals remain in hospital, one of them in a critical condition. Led by our Ambassador, Quinton Quayle, Foreign Office staff are offering all assistance they can. I would like to commend them and the Thai authorities for the way in which they have responded to this terrible tragedy.”

The crash happened as the One-Two-Go Airlines aircraft attempted to land at the Phuket International Airport and skidded off the runway, broke into two pieces and burst into flames.

In total, 89 people were killed in the crash, which is being blamed on both the pilot and faulty equipment.
