Cyclone warning issued for Tonga and Fiji

Travel alerts have been issued for the Pacific islands of Tonga and Fiji due to a powerful cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Gita is expected to make landfall this afternoon local time in Tonga, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

“It may cause flash flooding and landslides and could severely disrupt essential services,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office warned in an updated travel advisory.

“Monitor local media, including local radio broadcasts, for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.

“We strongly advise that you do not venture outdoors and remain well away from the sea, due to the possibility of storm surge.”

There is no permanent UK diplomatic presence in Tonga.

The current forecast from Fiji’s Meteorological Service has Gita passing to the south of Fiji’s main islands tomorrow (Tuesday).

“However, a tropical cyclone alert is in force for the Lao Group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands,” the FCO said.

“Strong winds and heavy rain are expected. Monitor local media, including local radio broadcasts, for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.”
