Going Places fined £4,000 for advertising ‘misleading’ offers

GOING Places has been fined £4,000 for posting misleading holiday-discount offers in the windows of a number of its shops in south Wales.

The company admitted breaches of the trade description regulations at Merthyr Magistrates’ Court.

The court was told that in three shops in Aberdare, Pontypridd and Merthyr posters had been displayed offering guaranteed discounts of £300 per couple on certain holidays.

Following complaints, trading standards officers found the actual discounts were lower.

In mitigation, Going Places said the staff at the branches had failed to follow specific instructions from head office.

Defence solicitor James Aldridge said: “There was no intention to deceive the public. This was a matter of carelessness at branch and area manager level.”
