Canaries lead Boxing Day sales rush

The Canary Islands proved as popular as ever as Boxing Day signalled the start of the peak turn of year trading period for holiday firms, according to search figures from Teletext Holidays.

The ever popular Spanish islands took top spot in the most serached for destinations on the day after Christmas. The island of Tenerife also scooped third place with Lanzarote in fifth.

The only other country to figure in the top five was Egypt, the country taking fourth spot and the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh second, suggesting the recent scare over shark attacks has had little impact.

Victoria Sanders, managing director of Teletext Holidays, claimed new year trading had got off to a great start.  “We normally see a big spike in online traffic on Boxing Day, but this year we’ve been seen an increase in online holiday searches which is up on previous years.

“Boxing Day figures show a huge increase web traffic to the site – searches were 60% up on our December 2010 average.  I’m confident that we’ll see significant increases in business across all channels over the weeks and months ahead, given that we are investing in a multi-million pound marketing campaign.”
