Tourists caught up in Thailand floods

Thousands of tourists have been stranded on resort islands in southern Thailand due to severe floods which have killed at least 11 people.

The airport on the island of Koh Samui is one of three which has been forced to close while trains to the region have been cancelled and several main roads blocked.

Ferries between the mainland and Samui Island, Phangan Island and Tao Island are also disrupted due to rough seas.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said British travellers in affected areas should follow advice from local authorities and local news reports in the wake of storms and heavy rain.

Floods have caused damage along the southern coast of the country with affected provinces including Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Surat Thani (including the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao), Phattalung, Chumphon, Trang and Satun.

“There is a continued risk of mudslides and flash flooding in these areas,” the FCO warned. “Electricity and communications are currently disrupted across the region.”

Nakhon Sri Thammarat airport is temporarily closed and flights suspended due to runway flooding. Flights from Koh Samui airport are also disrupted, the FCO confirmed.

Britons in need of urgent assistance can call the FCO on +66 (0)2305 8333 or +44 (0)20 7008 1500, or the Thai Tourist Police on 1155.
