Pacific Earthquake close to Fijian capital

An earthquake has struck about 140 miles east of Suva, the capital of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the Associated Press agency reported.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck at a depth of 380 miles. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately issue a tsunami alert.

The region lies on the ‘Ring of Fire’ – an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. About 90% of the world’s quakes occur in the region. California suffered a 3.2 magnitude earthquake outside San Francisco yesterday, according to the US Geological Service.

The quake, which had a reported depth of 5 miles, was centred about 30 miles east of the city. There were no reports of damage or injuries. The tremor was the second in the region in six days, after a 3.9 magnitude earthquake on October 20 about 2 miles east-southeast of Berkeley.
