MSC charters Symphony to Greek-based operator
MEDITERRANEAN Shipping Cruises is to charter out its ship Symphony on a long-term contract from March 2000.
Piraeus-based operator Golden Sun Cruises plans to rename the 632-passenger ship Aegean Spirit and use it to offer cruises around the Greek islands.
MSC is thought to be taking its oldest ship out of the fleet in order to make way eventually for a newer vessel. Symphony entered service in 1950.
UK managing director Peter Pate said the company is in the market for another ship, although he stressed that no decision was imminent. “When the right ship comes along we will get extra tonnage. We are not going to buy for the sake of buying,” he said.
Symphony has not been included in MSC’s programme after next March.
