Malay-style resort reopens for deluxe market

Tanjong Jara reopened officially this February after a four-year multi-million-pound refurbishment by YTL Hotels and Properties, to bring the resort up to international deluxe standards.

It is now featured by operators including Travel 2, Malaysia Experience and Magic of the Orient. The latter offers five nights’ room-only from £786 per person for a first-floor room including flights and transfers.

Tanjong Jara is 136 miles north of Kuantan on the edge of the South China Sea and is about 50mins by car from Kuala Terengganu Airport; 45mins by air from Kuala Lumpur’s international airport.

Despite the extensive refurbishment, YTL has been careful to retain the traditional Malay style of the resort. There are 88 rooms in two-storey units – 44 Serambi ground-floor rooms and 44 first-floor Bumbung rooms – and another 12 single-storey beach rooms with fabulous outside sunken baths.

On arrival, guests are ‘roomed’ by staff -Êthey are not just shown their room but how to operate everything in it from the TV to the safe. ‘Rooming’ guests is a speciality of YTL.

Tanjong Jara’s therapy centre offers five types of massage at around £28 each, and several activities are available nearby, including scuba diving or snorkelling, bike riding, golf or jungle hiking. A trek to the 20-metre Chemerong Waterfall, deep in the Malay jungle, costs approximately £75.

Guests can even join chef Johann Ong on his early morning shopping trip to nearby Dungun food market.
