About a third of Lufthansa services – 600 flights – have been cancelled tomorrow (Thursday) due to a planned strike by German airport workers.
The carrier, which typically operates around 1,800 flights on a Thursday under the Lufthansa and Germanwings brands, said it was cancelling almost all of its domestic flights due to take off before 1pm. Long-haul flights would also be affected, it warned.
Lufthansa said the strike would cost it millions of euros. A walkout last month by security staff at Frankfurt airport, which brought chaos to the terminal as people were unable to get through security checks, cost the carrier €3 million in operating profit, Reuters reported.
Passengers can also expect delays and cancellations from Air Berlin, TUIFly and Condor.
The Verdi union expects around 1,400 people to take part in the strike action at Frankfurt airport alone.
The industrial action in a pay dispute will also affect Cologne-Bonn, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart and Munich airports.
