Travel giants to report winter trading

An update on summer bookings is expected as Tui Travel, easyJet and Thomas Cook all announce half-year results this week.

Figures from Thomson and First Choice parent Tui Travel and easyJet are due tomorrow (Tuesday) followed by Cook on Thursday.

The first half results to March 31 cover the winter, a period when all three companies traditionally report a loss.

Wyn Ellis at Numis predicts an underlying loss of £300 milllion at Tui Travel and £58 million for easyJet, while Thomas Cook could be £190 million in the red, the Independent reported.

Deutsche Bank analyst Geof Collyer expects Tui Travel to report flat revenues at £5.4 billion.

He also predicted a 9% like-for-like rise in the operating loss for the period to £315 million from £289 million.

Deutsche Bank’s profit forecast reflects the impact from a late Easter. The holiday fell in April this year, shifting £20-25 million profits into second half of 2014, which over the full year should even out.

“However, the company’s exit from loss-making businesses, increased proportion of online sales, strong demand for unique holidays and higher selling prices should essentially build up margins,” Collyer told investors’ portal Invezz.

EasyJet upgraded its forecast in March, noting that it expected to post a first-half performance ahead of its previous guidance.
