Tunisia moving towards democracy ‘with confidence’, says tourism minister

Tunisia’s tourism minister has said the country is moving towards democracy “with confidence” ahead of elections this autumn.

Amel Karboul did not address renewed terrorism fears which prompted the Foreign and Commonwealth office to upgrade its travel advice to the country yesterday (Wednesday).

The FCO then reported a serious attack in the Chaambi mountains which killed and injured a number of Tunisian soldiers.

Instead Karboul chose to highlight the launch of a new national quality label in September covering transport and the environment as well as the country’s tourism and hospitality industry.

“In the meantime, we are making our efforts to promote our country, multiply the quality inspections and safety checks,” she said in a statement.

“We are about to experience a beautiful summer with hundreds of festivals all over the country. Tunisia is ready to receive more than two million tourists between July and August.

“Tunisia also has its schedule for the upcoming elections. October 26, 2014 will be the date of the legislative elections and the presidential elections will be held by the end of the year.

“Tunisia is definitely progressing toward democracy with confidence.”

The quality label is part of a new tourism strategy unveiled earlier this year, aiming to modernise the country’s tourism sector.

It focuses on diversifying Tunisia’s tourism offering and improving quality and training.
