Unite calls for rethink over closure of Blackpool Airport

The Unite union is demanding a rapid rethink of plans to press ahead with the closure of loss-making Blackpool airport next week.

More than 100 airport staff, including fire fighters, security, air traffic controllers and administrative staff, are set to lose their jobs when the airport shuts on October 15.

The attempted sale of the regional airport was announced at the end of August as a “final attempt” by its owners to secure its future.

Management argues that many months had been spent prior to this announcement approaching organisations with a potential interest in the airport in an attempt to find a buyer.

Three airlines – Jet2.com, Aer Lingus Regional and Citywing – fly from Blackpool airport.

Unite regional officer, Dave Kennedy, said: “We are shocked and very disappointed. We can’t believe Blackpool airport’s hasty decision to shut the airport next week. We urge Blackpool airport bosses to seriously rethink the planned closure.

“The loss of 120 jobs in Blackpool will have a huge impact on local communities. It is a major blow to the town, which is already struggling with high unemployment, and a shortage of skilled or well-paid work.

“Our main priority now is to work with local agencies to ensure that our members receive as much support as possible during this difficult time.”
