Holidaymakers are looking to escape the unpredictable British weather, with On the Beach claiming a “significant” rise in bookings for October school half-term.

Bookings during the forthcoming half-term are up by more than 20% over last year.

European holidays are proving most popular due to sterling strengthening against the euro.

The Greek Islands have seen the biggest increase in demand with bookings more than doubling.

The Canary Islands remains the favourite overseas autumn destination with Fuerteventura seeing the biggest increase in bookings, up 39%. Tenerife is up 34% year on year.

Resorts across Turkey are up 78% on the previous year. Sharm El Sheikh is up 47% and Tunisia 48%.

Chief marketing officer, Alistair Daly, said: “Holidays during half-term are always popular but our bookings show that this year looks set to beat the records.

“Typical European hot spots such as Greece and Turkey are attracting many more holidaymakers this year compared to last and with the pound performing well against the euro, holidaymakers will get more bang for their buck.”

Top five most popular half-term destinations:

  1. Tenerife
  2. Lanzarote
  3. Sharm El Sheikh
  4. Fuerteventura
  5. Algarve
