Egypt is starting to show positive signs of heading back to its 2010 arrival figures from the UK market.
Speaking at World Travel Market, minister of tourism Hisham Zaazou admitted times have been tough but said he believes things are starting to change for the better.
He added: “We are moving in the right direction. We entered 2014 believing we would have a strong year following a strong end to 2013.
“But negative travel advice from Germany, which was followed by 14 other countries, meant we had a 25% drop in the first half of the year.
“But after a strong summer we are hopeful that the UK market will send more than a million tourists once again.”
In 2013 UK arrivals dipped below a million having been 1.4m as recently as 2010.
In July numbers were up 15.8% year on year and this was followed by a 76.7% rise in August and a 193.5% rise in September.
This has seen arrival numbers from UK move to 674,000 (January to September) and raised hopes of hitting the million figure once more.
Total arrival numbers peaked in 2010 at 14.7m, dipping to 9.4m last year. Total arrivals this year so far (January to September) number 7.1m.
Zaazou also revealed that the Red Sea has been performing well, but Cairo and the Nile less so.
