Q&A: Matthew Boyd, entertainment director on the Carnival Jubilee

Entertainment director Matthew Boyd tells us what clients can expect on board new ship Carnival Jubilee. Interview by Clare Vooght

Q. What does being entertainment director involve?

A. I supervise the whole entertainment operation, including the music department, production cast and sports team. I also coordinate and schedule all the onboard entertainment activities for guests, participating in guest operations and regularly inspecting all entertainment operations.

Q. How did you get into the role?

A. I began my journey in Carnival’s youth department and progressed to the position of youth director. I was promoted to entertainment director in 2018.

Q. What does an average day on board look like for you?

A. It varies depending on whether it’s a sea day or a port day. On a sea day, we start with checking emails and conducting a ship walk to make sure all lounges and locations meet our standards, usually with the hotel or entertainment department.

During the day, we focus on office work such as programming and admin. Port days are similar, but we will also check the gangway operations in the morning and try to spend some personal time off the ship if we can. In the evenings, I’ll be on the floor watching a show or music set, and overseeing operations to ensure smooth guest experiences.

Q. Name the best places you’ve travelled to with Carnival.

A. I have had the pleasure of visiting some incredible destinations including Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Cuba and Aruba.

Q. What can guests travelling on Carnival Jubilee expect?

A. Guests will enjoy a wealth of entertainment, dining choices and fun, with a host of activities available, from the thrilling Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster to shows, comedy, live music, deck parties, trivia and games.

Q. Which entertainment acts should guests look out for?

A. They should be sure not to miss Rio Carnival, an exhilarating new aerial show at Center Stage. And don’t forget to check out Dear Future Husband, our latest musical in the Jubilee Theater. Additionally, make sure to catch Lonestar Tailgate, featuring Texas-themed activities throughout the cruise.

Q. What’s your favourite thing to do on board Carnival Jubilee?

A. It’s hard to pick just one favourite thing to do on board the ship, but if I had to choose, I’d say indulging in a delicious meal at Bonsai Sushi followed by a show.
