Car hire: costs vary depending on length of hire and season.


Example: Avis hire for seven-13 days from April to September starts at £20 a day for a four-door manual compact car or from £34 in February.


Camper hire example: Maui two-berth camper for five-20 days starts at £20 a day from April to October or from £52 daily fromin December to February.


Petrol: unleaded currently 81c a litre (less than 30p)


Driving regulations: drive on the left as in the UK. Seat belts are compulsory in both front and back seats. Drink driving limit is lower than in the UK and strictly enforced. Upper speed limit is 62 mph.


Driving tips: there are 60,000 miles of roads in New Zealand. Plan routes carefully and don’t try to do too much each day. Roads are generally good, well signposted and uncrowded. All petrol stations offer attendant service.
