n nuremberg to mark 950th anniversary



Nuremberg is to mark its 950th anniversary next year. To celebrate, the city will stage a production of Wagner’s opera DieMeistersinger von Nurnberg in June 2000 and a Durer exhibition in September.



n magdeburg stages garden exposition



The city of Magdeburg in the former East Germany is staging the country’s 25th national garden andgreenery exposition along the banks of the River Elbe. The event, known as BUGA ’99, runs until October 17.



n tourist route to mark birth of goethe



This year is Goethe year in Germany. A tourist route has been set up tocommemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the country’s famous poet and philosopher. The route links key towns in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s life, including his birthplace, Frankfurt, and Leipzig, where the poet lived and worked.

The historic town of Weimar is celebrating its status as cultural capitalof Europe for 1999 witha series of events. Aliterature festival in early June celebrates the lifeand work of the famous author Schiller, while the Weimar State Orchestra will see out the year with a New Year’s Eve concert. Exhibitions includeFashion between Revolution and Restoration and the Rise and fall of the modern age, Weimar1890-1990.
