BA and Virgin face Christmas strikes

A possible strike by British Airways cabin crew over Christmas and the new year could be compounded by a walkout by pilots at Virgin Atlantic.

The result of a ballot by members of the Professional Pilots’ Union working for Virgin Atlantic is due to be released tomorrow.

This means that industrial action could be staged just before Christmas, with a work to rule threatened in a dispute over union recognition.

It would lead to a “significant number of flights” not being covered by pilots, the union claims.

The Virgin Atlantic action is based on the alleged failure of the airline to fully recognise the Professional Pilots’ Union, which claims to represent the majority of those flying with the carrier.

No strike dates have been disclosed by the Unite union representing BA Mixed Fleet cabin crew who rejected a 2% pay offer.

However, Unite only has to give seven days notice of a walkout, meaning that flights could be disrupted after December 21.

Unite said 79% of the crew that took part in the ballot voted for strike action on a turnout of 60%.
