British Mediterranean to decide on payments

BRITISHMediterranean Airways will make a decision on restructuring commission payments at the end of the summer.

Chief executive Des Hetherington confirmed the airline is not joining other British Airways franchise carriers and slashing rates for the summer.

“We will review in four months and then make a decision,” said Hetherington.

He said the airline was under no pressure from BA to come in line with its 7% rate and will continue to pay 9%.

British Mediterranean is one of only two BA branded airlines not to reduce payments since GB Airways, Cityflyer, Brymon Airways and Maersk Air cut rates from this summer.

The other BA airline sticking with 9%, British Regional Airlines, is also carrying out a review of payments and is expected to announce changes in the winter.

Agents are concerned that commission cutting by BA’s franchise partners will heraldcuts by other Oneworld carriers.

Meanwhile, Hetherington said the airline expects to launch at least two new routes for summer 2000 after taking delivery of new Airbus A320s.

He refused to name the destinations, but said they would be in former Soviet countries or in the Middle East.

In the meantime the airline is set to increase Heathrow-Damascus flights to five a week. The capacity rise is dependant on the outcome of last week’s UK-Syria bilateral talks.
