Open skies to take off again

THELATEST open-skies talks between the Government and US officials are expected on March 25.

US transportation secretary Rodney Slater is due to meet deputy prime minister John Prescott to try and revive the bilateral negotiations.

A Government spokeswoman confirmed that UK and US officials were considering the results of last month’s open-skies meeting, but they could not say if Slater was due in London.

February’s talks ended without success as the US delegation refused to consider a UK proposal which would gradually free up slots at Heathrow for new entrants in return for a relaxation in USlaws preventing British carriers operating in the US domestic markets (Travel Weekly February 24).
